[C I] conversion factor α[C I] as a function of metallicity. The dark green band marks the value derived using X[C I]=(5.1 ± 1.8) × 10−5 for the sample of SMGs presented in this work. The light green band marks the SMG metallicities derived from [N II]/Hα by J. E. Birkin (2022). The black line represents the best-fit linear relation log α[C I] = −1/13 × log Z/Z + 1.33 from K. E. Heintz & D. Watson (2020). The solar/supersolar metallicities derived support the use of a higher (lower) X[C I] (αCO) in SMGs, rather than a universal value for different galaxy populations.
