Color–color scheme of our training sample using ground-truth spectra from the MITHNEOS survey. The top panel shows Z − J vs. J − K color of taxonomically classified C/X-, S-, D-, V-, and A-type asteroids in red, blue, purple, yellow, and gray circles, respectively. The bottom panel shows the J − H vs. J − K color for the before-mentioned taxonomies. These synthesized spectra colors have been solar-color removed and they reside in the Vega-magnitude system. The overplotted letters show the colors of the respective average spectra from F. E. DeMeo et al. (2009). Note that in our color–color system, the distinction between C and X complexes is hardly noticeable. Thus, we clustered the C and X complexes into a similar C/X space to minimize redundant classifications.
