Relation between luminosity and color for a (semiresolved) stellar population with varying Nstars. The Mr is shown as a function of the (g − r) color for 300 FASTAR semiresolved stochastic realizations with the same age (10 Gyr), metallicity (solar), and IMF (P. Kroupa 2002) but varying Nstars. Importantly, age, metallicity, and Nstars do not uniquely define the color and absolute magnitude of the models, and each symbol corresponds to a different, stochastic IMF sampling. Symbols are color-coded by the number of stars contained in each model realization, and the blue vertical line indicates the FASTAR SSP prediction for a fully sampled IMF. Gray boxes indicate the relation between different evolutionary phases and the predicted colors and absolute magnitudes.
