Velocity-normalized stacking of [C II] spectra for the BAL (panel (a)) and non-BAL (panel ((b) quasar samples. Each individual profile has been normalized by its FWHM before stacking. A broad component remains visible in the BAL stack, while the non-BAL stack shows no significant excess. This is consistent with the BAL broad residual not being driven solely by differences in intrinsic narrow-line widths.
