Caption: Figure 11.
Solar atmospheric structures of the ATLAS9, MARCS, and NewEra model atmospheres, compared with those of the semiempirical quiet-Sun models VAL-C and ALC-7. The displayed quantities, distinguished by color, are the gas pressure pg, continuum optical depth at 500 nm, τ500 (defined such that τ500 = 1 at height h = 0), electron number density ne, temperature T, and microturbulent velocity Vmic. Line styles distinguish the models, with the semiempirical models shown as thicker and lighter lines. The thick gray vertical lines in the upper part indicate the approximate cutoff heights of the MARCS, ATLAS9, and NewEra models. At h ≈ 50 km, T ≈ Teff = 5774 K. For MARCS and ATLAS9, Vmic = 1 km s−1; for NewEra, Vmic = 0 km s−1.
