Final state of three identical, Moon-forming simulations that showcase the effect of different resolutions on model results. Impact conditions are as in Figure 1: θcoll = 45∘, vcoll/vesc = 1, and Tsurf ≈ 2000 K. From left to right, simulations increase in resolution from 105 (left) to 106 (right). Major differences are apparent between 105 and 5 × 105 particles, including the formation of an intact satellite. Results appear to converge at 5 × 105 particles. The increase from 5 × 105 to 106 does not change impact outcome and results in minimal changes (∼0.23%) to the mass of the final satellite. As in Figure 5, colors represent material and origin body: blue for target’s mantle, purple for impactor’s mantle, red for target’s iron core, and yellow for impactor’s core.
