Concept of a blazed grating. The gray bars symbolize the grating bars of a grating that is positioned such that its surface is grating perpendicular to the incoming rays (and thus the grating bars are parallel to the direction of the rays). The black bars are tilted by angle γ with respect to the incoming rays (blazed grating). The most likely direction for the diffracted photons is near twice the blaze angle.
