Changing N eff introduces phase shifts in the acoustic oscillations, however, constraints on these phase shifts are weakened by a degeneracy between N eff and θ s . Here, we show the marginalized two-dimensional posteriors for N eff and θ s from the CMB data for the ΛCDM+ N eff+ Y p model. The black curve shows the correlation between the two parameters due to the phase shifts in the acoustic oscillations. This curve is defined using the Bashinsky & Seljak (2004) prescription for the phase shifts, normalized to the best-fit θ s = 1.0429 × 10 −2 at N eff = 3.046.
