α _CO as a function of metallicity. Blue measurements show α _CO from virial mass calculations using high-resolution (≲ 30 pc FWHM) CO mapping. Red measurements show α _CO from infrared observations. The "ULIRGs" label indicates roughly the region of parameter space occupied by the dense, excited gas in merger-induced starbursts (Downes & Solomon 1998).
