Histogram of the galaxy redshifts for the field surrounding PKS 0405−123. The filled histogram shows the results for galaxies within 10^{﹩\arcmin﹩} of PKS 0405−123, while the open histogram shows the distribution for our full sample. The red arrows indicate the redshifts of metal‐line systems along the sight line. The blue arrows denote absorption systems with ﹩N_{\mathrm{H}\,\,{}^{{\rm{\small I}}}}> 10^{14}﹩ cm⁻² but no apparent metal absorption. The objects in the bin at ﹩z=0﹩ are stars.
