Caption: Figure 5.

A zoomed-in time series between 17:10 and 17:19 of the magnetotail flapping event in local (LMN) coordinates. (a) BL, BM, and BN magnetic field rotated from MSO to LMN with the eigenvector basis L = (0.967, 0.152, −0.203), M = (0.181, 0.148, 0.972), and N = (0.178, −0.977, 0.116). (b) Magnetic field magnitude during the same interval. The five current-sheet crossings identified are C1–C5, marked with dashed gray lines. The accompanying yellow interval is the interval used for MVA on each individual crossing. Note that C5 does not have a yellow interval because MVA is unable to be calculated for C5. BL approaches 0 but is still slightly negative at the C5 crossing time. Instead of crossing to positive BL, BL dips back to negative before rising again to cross the current sheet again about 15 s later. (c) The resulting nM and nN components from MVA for C1–C4. (d) The resulting nL and nN components from MVA for C1–C4.
