The process of colony formation in EPS. Bacteria attach themselves to a substrate, e.g., a volcanic clast (left) and subsequently start excreting EPS (left). The EPS accumulates and forms slime layers around the microbes, serving as a protection and nutrient trap and helping the microbes to reproduce. Subsequently, a biofilm is formed.
