The noise characteristics of the image background are close to Gaussian. The pixel-by-pixel distribution of normalized flux in the PSF-subtracted F444W image is shown here. Although the region near the star has residual speckles that are both strongly negative and positive (left- and rightmost bins in the dashed histogram show outlier pixels that are <−5σ and >5σ, respectively), the field more than 3″ from the star (solid line) is a close match to a normal distribution (dotted line), with relatively few candidates for new source detection.
