Mean charge states of selected Fe ions escaping into the interplanetary medium (upper panel, circles) and their energy spectrum (lower panel) for model 2. We have selected for the interplanetary registration only those ions whose mean energy in the nearest downstream region was ≈8 MeV nucleon⁻¹ and mean charge was ≈+15 (square with cross). The circles and histogram show their distributions upon arrival at the interplanetary medium. The dash‐dotted curve in the upper panel indicates an equilibrium mean charge of an Fe ion with fixed energy (shown as a reference line; Kocharov et al. 2000b).
