"Redefined" phase trajectories for n = −2. The same trajectories as in Fig. 8 are plotted, but φ has been redefined so that it is no longer constrained between −π and π (notice the limits on the y‐axis), as described in § 5.1. In linear theory the phases do not change with time; significant departures from this can be seen in all but the lowest k modes.
