Top panel: color–color criteria for star–galaxy separation adopted in the S82-MGC. Shaded contours and data points represent the distribution of sources with i < 21.5. The colors are Galactic extinction corrected. Bottom panel: same as above but for SDSS Coadd TYPE = 3 sources classified as galaxies. The TYPE based galaxy classification is contaminated by a significant fraction (∼10%) of stars, likely as a result of PSF characterization problems in the Coadd. SDSS Coadd point-sources (TYPE = 6) do not contaminate the color–color based galaxy locus.
