Major, 2003 October 28, X17-class flare originating at the periphery of a large active region, AR 10486, synchronizes the entire active region and causes bifurcation of a large chaotic conglomerate of coronal loops into a huge regular solenoid with a lifetime exceeding 4 hr. Note that the flare kernel first appears in the chromosphere (panel (c)).
