Presented here is HR-AFM molecular imaging performed on the chloroform extract of the Murchison meteorite. Image 1 gives a broad view of the Cu(111) crystal with molecular motifs present in STM mode. The zoom in of image 2 provides more detail than the larger overview. HR-AFM images 3–5 show aliphatic, saturated hydrocarbon chains with R groups present at either end. Approximate structures are shown below these images. Images 6 and 7 highlight the difficulties in performing these measurements, where structural resolution was unobtained, even at the same distances and approximate frequencies as those for other resolved structures.
