The limit between Darwin stable and Darwin unstable binaries is a steep function of the mass ratio. Very small mass ratios <0.1 are far more likely to lead to a merger than binaries with higher mass ratios. R1 is the radius of the primary, and acrit is the separation at which the binary becomes Darwin unstable.
