Magnetic gradient current, j _G , in a high-beta plasma layer (shaded) constitutes the main generator current of the Type I system. On the upper side, it flows opposite to the total current, j _⊥,tot, and connects in part to field-aligned sheet currents, J _|| (Haerendel 2009).
