Comparison of the histogram and kernel density estimates. The true density is shown by a thin line, and the kernel estimate obtained by the R stats package for a sample of size 1000 is shown by a thick line. For comparison, we show a histogram (obtained also by R). It is clearly seen that the histogram is inferior to the kernel estimate.
