Luminosity‐metallicity relation for SDSS galaxies and various galaxy samples at ﹩z< 0.25﹩ from the compilation by Tremonti et al. (2004). The estimated oxygen abundance ﹩12+\mathrm{log}\,( \mathrm{O}\,/ \mathrm{H}\,) =8.98\pm 0.07﹩ (derived from the R23 index) for the DLA galaxy toward 3C 196 together with its luminosity ﹩M_{B}( \mathrm{AB}\,) =-21.1﹩ is consistent with the luminosity‐metallicity relation of the local spiral galaxies.
