Four snapshots illustrating the origin of the inner southwestern tail in NGC 7714 as a result of early mass transfer from NGC 7715. Gas particles from the companion are shown as dots, while the gas distribution of the primary is shown by a few density contours. Most of the inner southwestern tail particles are marked with plus signs. These particles were identified on the basis of their position in the bottom left‐hand panel. The bottom right‐hand panel shows a slightly rotated x‐y view at a time slightly before the present (see text). The inner southwestern tail is labeled. The H I loop is marked by clumpy contours extending out and upward from the right‐hand side of the primary. Most of the particles at the bottom of this panel originate in the galaxy B tidal tail.
