Dereddened UV flux at 2000 Å vs. energy index at the various epochs of IUE and HST observations of 3C 279. The upper branch shows the usual anticorrelation of spectral index and intensity for bright synchrotron sources, while the lower branch suggests the increasing importance of a flat accretion disk component at the lowest UV fluxes.
