Color composite images of η Car made from various combinations of filter bandpasses. The dark lanes are much redder in color than the surrounding bright cells, suggesting that these are opaque dust lanes. However, many regions in the equatorial ejecta and at the extreme edges of the bipolar lobes appear bluish, and may "see" the central star fairly directly. Note the near‐UV glow several arcseconds northwest of the central star at the base of the Fan in (a) and (b); this extra light disappears in (c). The high‐velocity ejecta outside the Homunculus are only visible in line emission, shown in (d).
