Sample spectra of foreground dwarfs (top) and M31 red giants (bottom) with low and higher S/N ratios. The low‐S/N data (﹩\mathrm{S}\,/ \mathrm{N}\,=6﹩ and 8) represent the approximate limit for which velocities and CaT metallicities could be barely determined; the S/N for the higher quality spectra are ~120 (top) and ~20 (bottom). Indicated are the wavelength regions of the surface gravity–sensitive sodium doublet and the CaT.
