Above: schematic of the ELISA ion storage ring. Neutral fragments formed in the first few microseconds after laser irradiation are detected with the Secondary Emission Detector (SED) (prompt action). Neutrals formed in the second straight section are detected with the Micro-Channel Plate (MCP) detector (delayed action). By switching the deflector voltages, daughter ions can be stored according to their mass/charge. Below: structures of C16H10+m, m = 0, 6, and 16.
