Butterfly diagrams for the three cases studied ((a)–(c) for case 1–3, respectively), with the toroidal field at the base of the convective zone (top panel) and surface radial field (bottom panel), normalized with their maximum, respectively. Case 1 is from the simplest unicellular model, and case 2 is from the four-cell model, where the surface radial field shows the imprint of the two counter-cells. Also note the asymmetric nature of the butterfly diagram of case 3, while still maintaining a mostly antisymmetric (dipole-like) solution. We mark a typical sampling window of width 1.5 solar cycles in each case with dashed lines.
