Synthetic spectra for a typical red giant, using Kurucz model atmospheres of different metallicities. The spectral resolution was reduced to match that of DEIMOS. A noise component was added to the bottom panel to illustrate a S/N ratio of 10. Even at these low S/N, visual ranking by the strength of a number iron lines (arrows) is possible and observable in our spectra (see Fig. 17).
