SDSS primary targeting assignments for objects that subsequently turned out to be M and L dwarfs in the SDSS EDR spectra. Most of the objects were originally targeted as quasars and galaxies or were targeted by the serendipity category, which targets objects with unusual colors. The label "Star: BD" refers to brown dwarfs. As described in the text, the large number of objects in the Star: BHB (blue horizontal branch) category is the result of a single plate made to check objects with stellar colors.
