Publication records of many-author papers over a forty-year period for three journals: Astronomy & Astrophysics (blue symbols), the Astrophysical Journal (black symbols), and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (red symbols). The data for individual years in the case of the ApJ are connected for clarity. The upper-left panel shows the total number of all papers per year scaled to 4000 papers. The lower-right panel shows the annual fraction of papers with more than 100 authors f(>100). Other panels shows f(m:n) defined as the annual fraction of papers for which the number of authors ranges from m to n.
