Illustration of how a simple velocity-based membership cut can preferentially remove binary stars from a dwarf-galaxy sample. The intrinsic velocities of single stars are represented by a Gaussian distribution with σcom = 5 km s−1, while orbital motion broadens the observed velocity distribution of binaries to σbin ≃ 7.07 km s−1. For a velocity cut of ∣Δvobs∣ < 15 km s−1, about 3.4% of binaries fall outside the accepted range, compared with only about 0.3% of single stars. The shaded regions show the stars rejected by the cut.
