FUV and visible electronic transitions are higher energy and affected by quantum mechanically derived selection rules, species of ion/atoms, and the symmetry of the E-field the atoms experience. NIR vibrational transitions are affected by the composition, atomic structure, and nearest neighbor/next neighbor chemistry.
