CI Aql in 1941. The diamonds are B-band magnitudes from Harvard, the empty triangles are limits, and the broken line the B-band template. The eruption is only seen in its tail, with no plates being taken earlier than roughly 121 days after the peak (at which time CI Aql had an elongation of 120° from the Sun). The seasonal gap was 194 days long, with this not being unusual. The large size of the seasonal gaps implies that many RN eruptions will be missed.
