The H+ + H0 column density as a function of the visual extinction associated with atomic gas for LOSs in the LMC and SMC where H I and Hα are the only spectral lines detected and therefore assumed to be diffuse gas. The lines in the figure represent the total hydrogen column density predicted for a given AV assuming N(H)/﹩{A}_{{\rm{V}}}﹩ = ﹩7.17\times {10}^{21}﹩ cm−2 mag−1 for the LMC, 1.68 × 1022 cm−2 mag−1 for the SMC, and 1.88 × 1021 cm−2 mag−1 for the Milky Way (Section 4.2).
