SYNAPPS models show that C I λ1.0693 is required to match the line profile of the Mg II λ1.0927 feature. The solid black line is the −0.4d spectrum of SN 2014J. These are the same data found in Figure 4, but plotted here without smoothing. The spectrum displayed as a red dotted line is a good fit to the data. It was produced by a model that includes multiple ions plus C I. The spectrum plotted as a blue dot–dashed line is a poor fit to the absorption feature. It was produced by removing C I from the model. The short dotted line marks the location of the absorption minimum for C I in the model.
