Median and best contrasts for initial observations in this survey, with the performance of the SPHERE/IRDIS subsystem given in orange and that of SPHERE/IFS in blue. In each case, the contrast shown is the angular+spectral differential imaging contrast, i.e., the contrast curve when both spectral and angular diversity are used to subtract speckles, and where the images are co-added across wavelength. Although the IFS slightly outperforms IRDIS in the very near-field, the instruments perform similarly beyond ∼0.″5. We reach typical contrasts of 13.8 mag with both systems at 0.″5.
